Israel-Iran ceasefire off to rocky start, drawing Trump’s ire after fanfare -

(23:50 GMT)Here’s what happened today
- The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran has appeared to hold despite an Iranian missile strike and an Israeli attack on Tehran that took place after it went into effect.
- US President Donald Trump said he was “really unhappy” with Israel and used an expletive to voice frustration over the exchange of attacks between the two countries.
- Both Iran and Israel have claimed victory in the war and warned they were ready to renew hostilities if the other attacks.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “will act with the same determination” if Iran tries to rebuild its nuclear programme.
- Several US media outlets reported that Trump’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities did not destroy the sites and only set back Iran’s nuclear programme by months.
- According to medical sources, Israeli attacks killed at least 86 Palestinians – including 56 aid seekers – in Gaza.

(23:40 GMT)Iran’s nuclear sites ‘not obliterated’ after US strikes: Report
The Washington Post has joined other outlets in reporting that a top-secret US intelligence assessment has concluded that the attacks on Iran only set back the Iranian nuclear programme by months.
It reported that the intelligence findings assessed that US bombardment “failed to destroy the core components” of Iran’s nuclear programme, citing an unidentified source as saying that Tehran’s uranium stockpiles are unaffected.
The White House did not deny the existence of the assessment but said it is “flat-out wrong”.

(23:35 GMT)Unease among NATO members as Trump arrives at summit
There will be an air of anxiousness among US allies as Donald Trump attends the NATO summit following his attack on Iran and social-media announcement of a ceasefire.
Jim Townsend, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for European and NATO policy, said Trump would be seen as “forceful on the one hand because he conducted the strikes” and on the other, successful after he brought about “some type of ceasefire”.
But Townsend warned that beneath the surface “there’s going to be a lot of anxiousness among allies about what’s going to happen next”.
“This is something that is outside of the way diplomacy is done for a ceasefire,” he told Al Jazeera.
“That’s usually done with negotiations and something on paper, a framework – something that locks the two parties into negotiations and the firing of missiles stops. But right now, we haven’t seen anything like that.”

(23:30 GMT)Can’t bomb nuclear programmes ‘out of existence’
US media reports say that Iran’s nuclear efforts were only set back a few months after the US attack, something the White House has vehemently rejected.
Jeffrey Lewis, a professor of nonproliferation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, said the air strikes on Iran may ultimately demonstrate the limitations of military action to suppress atomic ambitions.
“I don’t think you can bomb nuclear programmes out of existence,” he said.
Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, said President Trump has boosted his leadership profile with the attack.
“In the moment, he looks like a tough guy who produces results. But when the dust settles and the blowback comes, you’re left thinking, ‘Wait a second, are we any better off’?”

(23:20 GMT)US senator questions impact of US attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites
Republican Senator Rand Paul has cast doubt over claims that Iran was close to getting a nuclear weapon and raised questions over the effects of the US and Israeli bombardment of the country.
“Does this stop them from getting a nuclear weapon, or does it spur them to get a nuclear weapon? I think that’s an open question; we’ll find out over time,” Paul told Bannon’s War Room podcast.
Trump on Sunday said that a full “payload” of bombs “obliterated” Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. Iranian officials, meanwhile, have not detailed the extent of the damage and have attempted to downplay the significance of the hits.

(23:10 GMT)US tells UN: Strikes degraded Iran’s capacity to build nuclear weapon
US air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities “effectively fulfilled our narrow objective: to degrade Iran’s capacity to produce a nuclear weapon”, acting US envoy to the United Nations Dorothy Shea says.
“These strikes – in accordance with the inherent right to collective self-defence, consistent with the UN Charter – aimed to mitigate the threat posed by Iran to Israel, the region and to, more broadly, international peace and security,” Shea told the 15-member UN Security Council.
US President Donald Trump has said the strikes over the weekend “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities.
A preliminary US intelligence assessment has determined the US strikes over the weekend on Iranian nuclear facilities have set back Tehran’s programme by only a matter of months, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters news agency.

Yair Lapid has praised Israel’s war on Iran as “one of the most glorious operations in the history of wars”.
But he added the time has come finish the attack on the Gaza Strip.
“Now we need to bring back the hostages and end the war in Gaza. To set Israel on a new path,” said Lapid in a video message on social media.
Lapid has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the security apparatus under his leadership of an “unpardonable failure” for not preventing the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack.

(22:20 GMT)Israel: Diplomacy ‘will happen soon’ following ceasefire
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told reporters, “We will have to speak and negotiate and make sure that we will not repeat and get to the situation where we were 12 days ago, where we had a major threat in the Middle East”.
While it’s still too early to assess all the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, he said, “We know we were able to push back the programme, we were able to remove the imminent threat that we had.”
As for calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Danon said Israel hopes to renew negotiations on the truce proposal that US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff put on the table.
He added he has no doubt Israel’s ability to confront threats it faced during the conflict will lead other countries to normalise relations with his country.
In response to a question, Danon said, “I think that President Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.”

(22:10 GMT)‘Netanyahu should not be dictating’ US policy: Bernie Sanders
Key progressive US Senator Bernie Sanders has penned an opinion piece for Fox News warning against going to war with Iran.
Sanders argued that President Trump had no legal power to order the strikes against Iran without congressional authorisation, stressing that “nobody seriously believes that Iran is a military threat” to the United States.
Sanders also hit out at Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the Israeli prime minister urged the US to invade Iraq in the early 2000s.
“Netanyahu should not be dictating US foreign and military policy,” the US senator wrote, accusing the Israeli government of “systematically destroying the Palestinian people”.
Numerous rights groups and UN experts have accused Israel of carrying out a genocide in Gaza – “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”.

The New York Times also reported that the attack set back the Iranian nuclear programme by “only a few months”.
The White House has now refuted the news reports while appearing to confirm the intelligence assessment exists.

(21:50 GMT)Israel-Iran ceasefire an opportunity to avoid ‘catastrophic escalation’
Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations’ under-secretary-general for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, told the UN Security Council the truce is also an opportunity to peacefully resolve the Iran nuclear issue.
“Diplomacy, dialogue, and verification remain the best option to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme and to bring about concrete economic benefits to the people of Iran,” she said.
DiCarlo spoke at a council meeting on the remaining UN sanctions on Iranian nuclear activities and transfers under the 2015 nuclear deal it signed with six key nations in 2015, a deal that will expire in October. President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the agreement in 2018.

Highlighting Donald Trump’s call for Israel to stop bombing Iran after the ceasefire came into effect, James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, has urged the US president to pressure the Israeli government to stop the war on Gaza.
After Trump’s public warnings to Israel against carrying out strikes in Tehran, Israel only launched a minor attack, allowing the ceasefire to take hold.
“President Trump: If this really happened as you said it did, then why not use your power to tell the Israelis to end the genocide in Gaza & their intensified oppression of Palestinians in the West Bank?” Zogby asked in a social media post.
“Just tell Israel to stop, turn around, & leave. Go for it!”

(21:00 GMT)US gives $30m to Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: Report
The United States has committed $30m to a controversial group operating in Gaza despite mounting criticism over its role in deadly aid-site ambushes by the Israeli military, a news report says.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), established in February, has been accused by UN officials and international rights groups of enabling attacks on civilians by directing them to food distribution sites where Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire.
UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territoriy, Francesca Albanese, has previously called the GHF operation “humanitarian camouflage” and “an essential tactic of this genocide”.
Reuters news agency reported that while Washington has previously offered diplomatic support to GHF, this marks its first known financial contribution to the group, which contracts private US military and logistics firms to deliver aid into the besieged enclave.

(17:20 GMT)Netanyahu will use war with Iran to accelerate his political career
Military analyst and former NATO officer Yusuf Alabarda says Israel’s recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities will be viewed in Israel as a personal and political success for Prime Minister Netanyahu.
“For 20 years, Israel has had the ambition to get rid of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Netanyahu got what he wanted,” Alabarda said.
Netanyahu will “use it for his political career” and will “in the next election”, presenting it as a victory over what Israel considers its greatest “threat”, he said.
In contrast, Alabarda says Iran faces a tougher narrative. “Iran lost all its proxies inside Lebanon, Syria, and in many different parts of the world. Now, all the nuclear facilities have been damaged by the United States and Israel.”
Despite the scale of the damage, Alabarda ruled out government change in Tehran. He noted Iran’s ability to breach Israeli air defences, saying, “Iran was successful in penetrating the Iron Dome. For that reason, Netanyahu cannot go further for regime change.”

What did Israel accomplish in Iran after 11 days of incessant bombing?
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in his statement acknowledging the ceasefire that the Israeli goals have been achieved. Such an assertion seems problematic, to say the least.
What damage, if any, did Israel inflict on the Iranian nuclear programme? That is also unclear. Bombing the “Israel doomsday clock”, which Israelis often employ as a demonstration of Iran’s commitment to Israel’s destruction, was simply pathetic.

The Israeli military identified the soldier as 18-year-old Eitan Zacks from Beersheba, saying he was killed “as a result of a missile launched from Iran”.
An Iranian missile struck Beersheba in southern Israel shortly before the ceasefire came into effect, killing at least four Israelis.
Iran’s attacks on Israel have killed 28 people since fighting began on June 13. Israeli strikes on Iran have killed at least 400 civilians and wounded more than 3,000, according to the Health Ministry.

(16:20 GMT)Houthis laud Iran’s ‘heroic’ battle against Israel
The Yemeni group’s spokesperson, Mohammed Abdulsalam, says the Iranian leadership, people and military made sacrifices for 12 days to secure their independence, freedom and support for the Palestinian cause.
“The daily and destructive missile attacks against [Israel] are a page of honour in the record of Iran as the first Islamic nation with its self-made arsenal to confront an enemy loaded with Western weapons,” Abdulsalam said in a social media post.
“It was not only a battle against Israel and what it represents as a forward American base, but also against other Western countries that stood with the aggressors.”
He added Iran’s “heroic” confrontation against Israeli attacks showed that military violations of the region will not be without a price.

(16:10 GMT)After conflict, Iran likely to face ‘brutal’ nuclear negotiations
Israeli affairs analyst Dan Perry predicts Iran will soon be pushed back into nuclear negotiations with the US that will be “pretty brutal”.
“I think the Iranians will understand that the [Israeli military] operation with US involvement could resume if they continue to play for time and pursue the nuclear weaponisation threshold,” Perry told Al Jazeera. “I think that ship has sailed.”
“The US will come [at Iran] with a series of demands. Israel has to sit tight and let that happen.”

(15:40 GMT)Iran’s nuclear programme ‘degraded not ended’
Clara Broekaert, a research fellow at the Soufan Center, tells Al Jazeera that US and Israeli bombings failed to fully destroy Iran’s nuclear programme.
“Everything points to the fact that the nuclear programme has been degraded and not ended,” Broekaert said from Nice in southern France.
“You cannot bomb away the knowledge of how to develop nuclear weapons,” she added.
Broekaert noted Iran’s incentive for a nuclear weapon “may have actually been accelerated” as a result of the attacks made against it over the past two weeks.

(15:00 GMT)‘Israel can’t completely violate the will of the US’
Israeli affairs analyst Dan Perry says US involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict has been “incredible” throughout – from its historic direct attack on Iran to US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire declaration “on behalf of the parties” and the pressure on Israel to comply.
“Trump is trying to lay down the law and present himself as the sheriff of the region,” Perry told Al Jazeera. “It might be performative”.
Asked whether Israel would respect Trump’s plan, Perry said he doesn’t think Israel “really has as much latitude as I sometimes hear from various commentators”.
“Israel can’t completely violate the will of the US. It can’t continue such a massively impactful operation without US acquiescence,” he said.

(14:20 GMT)Netanyahu sees boost in popularity, might be tempted to call snap elections
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
There have been 28 people killed in Israel [during the conflict with Iran]. But for Netanyahu, it has been played as a success. The Israelis rallied around the flag. They were behind Netanyahu’s decision to attack.
If the ceasefire holds, Israel will have resisted being dragged into any sort of war of attrition. It’s taken under two weeks for Netanyahu to claim achievement of the goals he set in launching the June 13 attack. Netanyahu said his goals were to destroy Iran’s nuclear programme and its missile capabilities and that is what he says he’s done.
There are 20 evacuation flights setting off from Israel today to pick up Israelis stranded abroad. The country wants to show a return to normalcy.
The focus will return to Gaza, the captives in Gaza, and the horrors Israel is committing there. Before there’s too much focus on that, Netanyahu might be tempted to ride the wave of his popularity and call an election. His fortunes have turned.

(13:20 GMT)Professor says Trump underestimated Netanyahu’s ability to manoeuvre
Israel’s latest attacks on Iran are a “sign of defiance”, says Sultan Barakat, professor of public policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar.
The academic’s comments came after Trump spoke of his anger at ceasefire violations by both Israel and Iran.
Through his country’s continued military operations against Tehran, Netanyahu wants to show Trump and the world that it is “Israel first”, Barakat told Al Jazeera.
The public policy professor added that Israel’s actions could force Trump to reconsider his approach.
“I think that now Trump must be recalculating his position,” he said. “He would have felt that he was able to control both sides, but I think he must have underestimated the ability of Netanyahu to manoeuvre and to manipulate the situation.”
Barakat noted that Israel was unlikely to fully conclude hostilities “without a serious attempt at regime change” in Iran.

(12:10 GMT)Trump’s latest comments likely to be received positively in Tehran
Just 24 hours ago, Trump was a sworn enemy of Iran.

I don’t know how this is going to be received in Tehran, but probably it’s going to have a positive impact. It might give the impression that Trump is serious about this ceasefire.
But how will this be translated into realistic diplomatic activities? Are the Iranians going to meet Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff?
And are the Iranians ready in the future to meet with President Trump himself?

As the US president prepared to fly to Europe for a NATO summit, he told reporters of his frustration that both Israel and Iran had violated the terms of their ceasefire agreement, just hours after it was announced.
Before his departure, Trump also swore while making comments about Israel and Iran.

He added that Trump “obviously feels quite annoyed, and betrayed, perhaps, by Benjamin Netanyahu”.

(10:40 GMT)UNRWA chief says US-backed Gaza aid system an ‘abomination’ and ‘death trap’
The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has hit out at a recently established, US-backed system for aid distribution in the Gaza Strip.
“The newly created so-called aid mechanism is an abomination that humiliates and degrades desperate people,” Philippe Lazzarini said at a news conference in Berlin. “It is a death trap costing more lives than it saves,” he said.
The establishment of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) was announced by the United States in early May after Israel completely cut off supplies into Gaza for more than two months.
Officially a private organisation, the GHF began operations on May 26, sidelining the UNRWA, which has long spearheaded efforts to assist the population in the Gaza Strip.
More than 450 people have been killed and nearly 3,500 injured by Israeli fire while seeking aid since late May – many close to GHF sites.
Israeli attacks have killed at least 50 aid seekers in Gaza so far today, medical sources told Al Jazeera earlier.

But in the end, to Qatar, this is a breach of its sovereignty. That’s why there was this reaction [from Doha condemning the attack], which is understandable.
We also saw Qatar playing a mediation role, helping to bring this [Israel-Iran conflict] to an end.

France’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed the Israel-Iran ceasefire and called on Tehran to quickly restart negotiations on its nuclear programme.
“France urges Iran to engage without delay in negotiations leading to an agreement that addresses all concerns related to its nuclear and ballistic programs and its destabilising activities,” the ministry said in a statement.
Tehran had engaged with the US in mediated nuclear talks, but they were cancelled after Israel launched its surprise attack against Iran on June 13.

(09:35 GMT)Iran thanks Qatar for ‘constructive role’ in de-escalation
The Iranian deputy foreign minister has expressed his gratitude to Qatar for helping to prevent escalation in the region, Iran’s Young Journalist Club reports.
In a phone call, Majid Takht-Ravanchi thanked Qatari Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi for his country’s “constructive role”.
Takht-Ravanchi was quoted as saying Iran “is determined to continue and strengthen relations between the two countries based on good neighbourliness and supreme interests”.
The report comes after Iran fired a salvo of missiles at the US base in Qatar’s Al Udeid in retaliation for strikes on its nuclear facilities.
In response, Qatar strongly condemned the move and summoned the Iranian ambassador on Tuesday.

(09:10 GMT)Qatar summons Iran’s envoy over attack on Al Udeid airbase
Qatar’s foreign ministry has summoned Ali Saleh Abadi to protest the IRGC’s attack on the Al Udeid airbase on Monday evening, condemning the assault as a “flagrant violation of its sovereignty and airspace”.
The ministry affirmed Qatar’s right to respond, according to a statement.
It also “emphasised to the Iranian ambassador that this violation is completely inconsistent with the principle of good neighbourliness and the close relations between” Qatar and Iran, especially since Doha “has always been an advocate of dialogue with Iran and has exerted tireless diplomatic efforts in this regard”.
In a separate statement, the ministry said it has sent a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as well as the Security Council denouncing the IRGC’s “extremely dangerous escalation” and saying the attack posed a “direct threat to regional peace and security”.

(09:00 GMT)Al-Shifa Hospital ‘bloodbath’ as wounded aid seekers seek treatment
A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has regional powers stepping back from the edge of a larger war.
But the morning here [in Gaza] is still quite heavy. There are more screams, tears and trauma. There are more funerals and people bidding farewell to dead family members who were killed at distribution centres in Rafah, near the Netzarim Corridor, and in northern Gaza.
Casualties were brought to various health facilities, including al-Shifa Hospital, some by animal-drawn carts. The emergency ward there turned into a bloodbath, and many died waiting for medical care.
Five people from the same family were also killed in an attack on a residential home here in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood.
In total, 37 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since dawn.

Other countries in the region, including Qatar and Iraq, also reopened their airspace, with flight operators confirming their plans to resume services on Tuesday.
Airlines now have large backlogs to clear.
“With over 25,000 impacted passengers currently in Doha, the immediate priority is clearing the significant backlog of those passengers and flying them to their final destination,” a spokesperson for Virgin Australia said.

Israel’s military has warned that “the danger persists” despite the government earlier announcing it had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran on the 12th day of war between the foes.
“The chief of staff instructed all of the army to maintain a high level of alertness and preparedness for a powerful response to any violation of the ceasefire,” army spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in a televised news conference.
“I want to stress that at this stage, there is no change to the Home Front command instructions. The instructions must be obeyed. The danger persists.”

(08:40 GMT)Israel and US failed to achieve their war goals against Iran
Iran is approaching the ceasefire cautiously because Israel does not have a good track record when it comes to committing to ceasefire deals in Gaza and Lebanon, said Abas Aslani, a research fellow at the Center for Middle East Strategic Studies in Tehran
“That’s why Tehran is cautious, and officials haven’t come out to confirm it officially. If, in time, there is no violation, I think Iran will adhere to the ceasefire,” he told Al Jazeera.
Aslani said this was a war between Iran and Israel and its partner, the US, with the two allies defining their goals as destroying the Iranian nuclear programme and bringing about “regime change” in Iran, which were not achieved.
“We saw damage inflicted against Iranian nuclear facilities, but the country’s nuclear programme is not just about those facilities and equipment. Iran relocated its nuclear material to a secure place, and its know-how and knowledge are intact,” he said, adding that Iran’s missile capabilities were not destroyed either, as it hit Israel earlier in the day.
Aslani said “meaningful” negotiations with the US cannot take place in the short term, as both the US and Israel attacked Iran while nuclear talks were ongoing.

(08:39 GMT)Iran’s top security body announces ceasefire with Israel
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran has issued a statement on the “national decision to impose the cessation of war on the Zionist enemy and its vile supporters”.
Iran’s armed forces delivered a “humiliating and exemplary response to the enemy’s cruelty”, it said, adding that it culminated in the attack on the US base in Qatar last night and dawn missile strikes on Israel.
The council said Tehran responded to attacks on its territory in a proportional and timely manner, and “forced the enemy into regret and accepting defeat and the unilateral cessation of its aggression”.
“The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, without any trust to the words of the enemy and with their hands on the trigger, are ready to deliver a decisive and deterring response to any violating act by the enemy.”

(08:30 GMT)NGOs call for end to militarised humanitarian aid operations in Gaza
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and 14 other NGOs are calling for multilateral aid agencies to be allowed to work in Gaza again.
The call comes amid concerns about the work of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli and US-backed organisation mired in controversy.
Since GHF started operations in late May, Israeli soldiers have killed hundreds of Palestinians gathering for food near its aid centres.
In a letter, the signatories said those involved in GHF’s operations in the enclave risked being complicit in war crimes, crimes against humanity and possibly genocide.
Philip Grant, executive director of TRIAL International, said GHF’s model of militarised and privatised aid delivery “violates core humanitarian principles”.
He added that GHF’s work “exposes all those who enable or profit from it to real risk of prosecution for complicity in war crimes, including the forcible transfer of civilians and the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare”.
Grant concluded that legal accountability for GHF’s actions were “clear and inescapable under international law”.

(08:20 GMT)Israel’s war on Gaza remains roadblock to regional peace
Luciano Zaccara, an associate professor of Gulf politics at Qatar University, says the US, Israel, and Iran are all putting a positive spin on the Trump-declared ceasefire to “save face” and “avoid escalation”.
Zaccara said while Iran had already signalled its willingness to return to nuclear negotiations if Israel’s attacks ceased, sustainable peace in the region is unlikely without an end to Israel’s war in Gaza.
“People [are being] killed there more than ever before, and this does not seem to be important [to many countries] any more, at least for Israel or the US.”

(08:00 GMT)Iran likely to exit NPT in coming weeks
More from Foad Izadi, the professor at the University of Tehran.
He told Al Jazeera that Iran has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) because it is a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but this collaboration has not benefitted Tehran.
So, Iran is likely to use Article 10 of the treaty, which allows countries to leave it, “in the coming days and weeks”, he said. “You don’t have to be a member of that treaty, there are many countries that are not a member. Israel, for example, is not a member,” Izadi noted.
“And Iran doesn’t have to be there, given the fact that Iranian nuclear sites that were under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, that were under the monitoring of International Atomic Energy Agency, were attacked, which is against international law,” he said.
“You’re not supposed to attack these sites, especially the sites that are being monitored all the time. So being a member of NPT has not benefitted Iran. And the majority of parliament wants to leave that treaty. I think that issue will be debated in Iran in the next few days,” he added.

(07:55 GMT)Latest attack on Israel show truce remains ‘tenuous, precarious’
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
We saw the warning from the Israeli Home Front Command about incoming missiles detected from Iran. The area covered was in northern Israel, so Haifa and the surrounding area.
There is still a lack of clarity as to how many missiles were launched and why we didn’t hear any sirens here in Amman, as has been the case in previous instances.
While the Israeli army statement says the missiles came from Iran, we haven’t seen any statement from Iran itself, and we don’t know if any or all of the missiles have been intercepted.
If it is confirmed these missiles did come from Iran, we might see Israeli retaliation in those remaining hours of that window [before Israel’s side of the ceasefire comes into effect].
This is a reminder of how tenuous and precarious all of this is.

Jahangir did not specify how many people were killed and injured. He said parts of the administrative building were destroyed.

(07:40 GMT)Netanyahu had ‘no choice’ but to back ceasefire
Political commentator Ori Goldberg says the Israeli government’s claim to have achieved all its objectives in Iran before the truce is “ridiculous”.
“It is really unclear, to say the least, what Israel’s goals were,” Goldberg told Al Jazeera, speaking from Tel Aviv.
“Over the past week, we heard Israel talk about everything from the decapitation of the nuclear programme to regime change.”
While there has been some damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities, Goldberg said it remains “completely unclear” whether Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium has been damaged or destroyed.
And given there was never an “imminent, inevitable” nuclear threat from Iran towards Israel to begin with, “nothing has essentially changed in the situation”, he added.
Goldberg said Israel likely agreed to the ceasefire due to the mounting damage from Iranian attacks and predictable pressure from the Trump administration.
“Having decided to hitch the Israeli horse to the Trump wagon, Netanyahu had no choice,” Goldberg said.
“Netanyahu decided to gamble on Trump coming to his rescue. Trump did, and Netanyahu is therefore obligated to assist in Trump’s goal, which was and still is ultimately securing the regional deal and not launching a regional war.”

(07:05 GMT)Iranians hope Israel realises attacking Iran was a ‘strategic mistake’
We’ve been speaking to Foad Izadi, a professor in the World Studies department at the University of Tehran.
He said he believes Israel wants to repeat its experience with Lebanon in Iran, by “claiming to have a ceasefire but attacking any time they want and killing anyone they want”.
But this plan will not work, he said.
“Iran’s ballistic missiles are fully functioning and we had the last rounds of missiles this morning … So the Iranian side hope Israelis realise that attacking Iran was a strategic mistake. They couldn’t do regime change, although they publicly asked for it. They couldn’t stop Iran’s ballistic programme, and they thought that by killing Iranian leaders, the military will become dysfunctional. That didn’t happen,” Izadi said. “So I think Americans and Israelis need to re-evaluate what they have done, and if they do that correctly, they realise that attacking Iran in that manner was not a good idea.”

(06:50 GMT)Ceasefire process ‘moving in positive direction’ despite confusion
Former US ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey says that while there has been confusion surrounding the details of the Trump-declared truce between Israel and Iran, ceasefires are typically “messy”.
“Over the past 50 years … I’ve seen a dozen ceasefires. They’re all messy,” Jeffrey told Al Jazeera. “Not all the troops get the orders … The timelines are [often] wrong.
“This confusion is normal confusion, but it’s clear that it’s moving in a very, very positive direction given what the Iranian foreign minister has said [on halting attacks if Israel does],” he said.
Jeffrey said Israel may prove the bigger obstacle due its hardline cabinet members, but “Trump is going to make it very clear” that he’s done Netanyahu a great service by bombing Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, and “he’s not going to take no for an answer”.

(06:40 GMT)Legislator from Netanyahu’s Likud party opposes Iran truce
There’s already pushback to the Israel-Iran ceasefire.
Dan Illouz, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, has said the only deal the government must sign is Iran’s “surrender agreement”.
In a statement posted on X, Illouz said the “regime in Iran is not a regime with which agreements are made – but a regime that must be defeated”.
Illouz said “if not defeated”, Iran will find new means against Israel.
This comes as Netanyahu faces pressure from right-wing members of his fractious coalition, as well as hardliners from his party, to continue forceful action against Iran.
In recent days, Netanyahu has hinted that he will support a government change in Iran, while Israeli media are advocating a partition of Iran along ethnic lines.

“Israel has removed a dual immediate existential threat – both in the nuclear and ballistic missile fields,” the statement said.
The Israeli military “achieved full air control over Tehran’s skies, inflicted severe damage on the military leadership, and destroyed dozens of central Iranian government targets”, it said.
“In light of the achievement of the operation’s objectives, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has agreed to the president’s proposal for a bilateral ceasefire,” it added.
“Israel will respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire.”

(06:30 GMT)Families of Israeli captives say ceasefire deal must include Gaza
Relatives of the Israeli captives held in Gaza are calling on their government to end the war on the Palestinian territory and secure the return of their loved ones.
“The ceasefire agreement must expand to include Gaza. We call on the government to urgently engage in talks that will lead to the return of all hostages and the end of the war. If they can achieve a ceasefire with Iran, they can also end the war in Gaza,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement on X.
“It is unthinkable that after a brilliant operation in Iran and a decisive, devastating blow to the Iranian axis, Israel would return to sinking in the Gaza quagmire. This contradicts all logic and every Israeli interest,” it said.
“Ending the operation in Iran without leveraging it to secure the return of all hostages would be a grave diplomatic failure. There is a historic window of opportunity, and the Israeli government has a duty to seize it with both hands.”

(06:15 GMT)How did the ceasefire unfold?
Trump, in a message on his Truth Social platform, said it was that “perfect hit” on Iran that brought everyone together and helped make the deal. He also said Israel and Iran both came to him simultaneously, asking for peace.
This might not be the way that the Iranians view it. One of their news anchors said a little earlier that Trump called in a begging-like manner after that attack on the US base in Qatar.
But here’s how the White House said it unfolded.
Trump was talking to Netanyahu and managed to broker the Israeli side. Once he got the Israelis on board, we believe he then called the emir of Qatar and said, look, effectively, can you deal with the Iranians? Can you bring them back on side? I’ve got the Israelis, but we need the Iranians on side. The emir and the prime minister of Qatar then managed to do that.
Meanwhile, JD Vance, who is the vice president, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Steve Witkoff, who was the Middle East envoy, they were having direct and indirect talks with the Iranians, and then once it started to come together. JD Vance and the Qatari prime minister brought the logistics together. So that is how it unfolded.
And that ceasefire is now, officially, in effect. But the question is, is it going to last?

The crews are still sifting through the rubble of the damaged building to make sure that nobody is stuck under the debris. This was significant – successive rounds of salvoes fired from Iran.
We have not heard anything from Israeli officials yet and that is to the great frustration of many Israeli commentators.

With the ceasefire between Iran and Israel now in effect, there’s an opportunity for the two sides to step back after 12 days of intense fighting.

According to the latest post on social media by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tehran has not agreed so far to a ceasefire. There’s actually no official announcement of an agreement on the Iranian side. So we are still waiting for confirmation on that.
Over the last few hours, we have not heard of the continuation of any Israeli strikes in Tehran, which is a promising indication about the prospect of the ceasefire as declared by US President Donald Trump.

- That six-hour period – which expired at 04:00 GMT (7:00am in Israel, 7:30am in Tehran) – was to allow Iran and Israel to wind down and complete their “final missions”.
- Trump said Iran will start the ceasefire first (04:00 GMT on Tuesday).
- Israel will follow 12 hours later at 7pm local time (16:00 GMT).
- Israel must stick to the ceasefire for 12 hours, after which it will be considered to be in full effect.

Also killed was a man in his 40s and a young man in his 20s, the report said.
In addition, emergency workers evacuated two people in their 50s, who sustained “moderate” injuries, while six others, who sustained light injuries, were treated on site.

(05:05 GMT)Death toll from latest Iranian strike on Israel rises to four
Israel’s Channel 14 is reporting that the number of people killed from the Iranian strike on Beersheba has risen to four.
The broadcaster quoted a fire and rescue official.
Linoy Reshef, spokesperson of the fire and rescue agency’s southern district, also told Channel 14’s Ariel Idan that additional people remain trapped in one of the buildings hit by the Iranian strike shortly before a ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect.
At least eight other people were reported injured, and two of them were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Let’s bring you up to speed:
- Israel’s military and medics say Iran has fired six volleys of missiles at the country, killing at least three people and wounding several more in the southern city of Beersheba.
- This comes after Trump said the two sides have agreed to a phased ceasefire, with Iran to begin the ceasefire at 04:00 GMT, and Israel to follow afterwards.
- Trump says Israel and Iran came to him “almost simultaneously” asking for peace and says the two countries have much to lose if they stray from the road of “righteousness and truth”.
- Iran’s Press TV says Israeli forces assassinated top nuclear scientist Sedighi Saber in a strike on Tehran.
- Media in Iraq and Iran have reported several attacks on military sites in the country, including the Taji base, the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad, the Balad base, as well as the Imam Ali base.

(04:50 GMT)Israel-Iran fighting ‘until the very last breath’
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
We’ve seen this happen in the past, in ceasefires with Israel, where parties would go on until the very last breath.
This was quite unusual, what we’ve seen in the past hours. Six different missile launches from Iran on various areas in Israel.
The most devastating in Bir as-Sab’, or Beersheba, where six people are feared dead and perhaps more trapped under the rubble in the building that was really devastated by a direct impact, a direct hit from a missile launched by Iran.
This is still developing in terms of what the final tally is from these different launches. What was impacted in addition to this building? This is certainly the most extended period of missile launches that we’ve seen.

(04:40 GMT)Israeli medics say people may be trapped in damaged buildings
Israel’s ILTV news channel is quoting the chief of the country’s emergency agency, Eli Bin, as saying that there are concerns that some people may have been trapped in three buildings that sustained serious damage in the latest Iranian strikes in Beersheba.
ILTV said that at least three people were rescued from a safe room on the fourth floor of one of the buildings that sustained a “direct hit”.
The rescue effort comes amid new missile alerts from Iran.
At least three people have been confirmed killed and several others injured in Beersheba on Tuesday morning.

(04:20 GMT)Iraqi authorities increase security around US, foreign embassies in Baghdad
We reported a little earlier on a drone attack on the Taji military base, located north of Iraq’s capital, Baghdad.
A senior US military official also told the Associated Press news agency that reports of an attack on a base housing US forces in Iraq were a false alarm, triggered by falling debris from a malfunctioning Iran missile that was aimed at Israel.
Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from Baghdad, said security has been increased around the US and other foreign embassies in the city.
“We understand that here in the capital, Baghdad, security forces have been deployed in and around the Green Zone, which is home to the US embassy and other foreign diplomatic missions,” Abdelwahed said.
“This comes after threats made by Iran-allied groups in Iraq threatening to attack US interests in the region and namely military bases,” he said.
“In Iraq, over the past week, there have been marches and demonstrations condemning the attacks against Iran and calling on the Iraqi government not to allow any foreign country to use Iraqi airspace to carry out attacks or air strikes inside Iran.”

The US president has again taken to Truth Social to laud the ceasefire deal he claimed he brokered between Israel and Iran, even as the deadly missile attacks continue on Israeli territory.
“We couldn’t have made today’s ‘deal’ without the talent and courage of our great B-2 pilots, and all of those associated with that operation,” he said, referring to the US bombers used in the attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.
“In a certain and very ironic way, that perfect ‘hit,’ late in the evening, brought everyone together, and the deal was made!!!” he added.

(04:10 GMT)Israeli analyst says waves of Iranian missiles possibly the ‘end game’
Israeli political analyst Akiva Eldar has welcomed as “good news” the ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel announced hours earlier by Trump, saying the latest wave of missiles from Iran followed a pattern where “every side will do its most to be portrayed as having total victory or at least face-saving”.
“Hopefully, this is the end game,” Eldar told Al Jazeera.
“This is maybe the beginning of the light at the end of the tunnel,” Eldar said.
“It happened before the ceasefire in Gaza with Hamas. It happened with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Until the last minute, they will try to improve the balance of power or the balance of damages and say, ‘Look, the last pictures, the last images, the last footage were are getting from the enemy is showing that we are doing good,’” he said.
“That it is not that we are surrendering. You see, what they can do we can do better,” he added.

(04:00 GMT)Israel tells people to remain in bomb shelters amid waves of Iranian missiles
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli military says it has now detected another launch of ballistic missiles by the Iranians.
In the first two barrages of rockets, there was a direct impact in southern Israel and the ambulance services are saying that three people have been killed in the direct hit. This was a seven-storey building in southern Israel that was targeted.
Now there are sirens across different parts of the country. It is still unclear how many missiles have been launched in this latest barrage, but the Israeli army said that a total of six in the first two barrages were launched – two missiles in the first and then four in the second.
The military says they are now working to intercept all of the rockets that have been fired and they are calling on people to shelter in place, to stay in those bomb shelters because they are still unsure when this event is going to be over.

The Israeli prime minister has yet to comment on Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Iran.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu convened a Security Cabinet meeting that lasted into the early hours of Tuesday morning. He also asked ministers to avoid making public statements on the ceasefire, it reported.
Iran, meanwhile, said it would stop its retaliation if Israel stop its attacks.
There have been several waves of strikes on Israel since then, with at least three people reported killed in the city of Beersheba.

(03:40 GMT)No IRGC confirmation yet as Israel hit by new wave of missiles
We are dealing with a highly fragile situation.
At least for the past one or two hours, we can say that we haven’t received any reports about the continuation of strikes. We haven’t received any reports regarding the sounds of explosions here in the capital and other cities.
This is what we have so far but still, I can tell you this is a very fragile situation.
First, Iran is saying that it’s going to retaliate as long as Israeli strikes continue.
Second, we have to keep in mind that so many infrastructures related to nuclear facilities as well as military sites, as well as buildings in residential areas, were targeted by the Israelis and now there is this public pressure on the establishment in Iran to continue this retaliation.
We received reports about missiles being launched from the Iranian territory. On that we have no confirmation so far because, basically, when the IRGC launches missiles, we’ve got statements from them about details, confirming these strikes have taken place. We are waiting for further statements coming out.
We are dealing with a highly intricate situation in which any movement could run the risk of further escalation.

(03:30 GMT)Ex-US official says Trump’s Iran-Israel deal ‘neither verifiable nor permanent’
Ned Price, a former spokesperson for the US State Department, has criticised the ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel announced by Trump, describing it as “neither verifiable nor permanent”.
In a series of posts on social media, Price, who served under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, wrote, “Success would’ve been permanently and verifiably preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuke, just the type of arrangement Trump needlessly tore up in 2018.”
He was referring to Trump’s decision to abandon the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and world powers in 2015, under then-President Barack Obama.
Price said the Trump administration should “leverage this moment” to reach a new diplomatic deal, warning that the US involvement in the war could push Tehran “to sprint towards a nuclear device”.

(03:10 GMT)Leaders of Japan and South Korea to skip NATO summit after US strike on Iran
Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung have both cancelled their plans to attend a NATO leaders’ summit in The Hague this week following the US military strikes on Iran.
A spokesperson for South Korea’s presidential office said Lee’s absence would be due to “a confluence of domestic matters and the volatile situation in the Middle East”.
Ishiba’s office cited “various circumstances” as the reason for his last-minute cancellation, but Japan is also in the midst of a series of grim anniversaries marking 80 years since the end of World War II. They include the anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa this week, which killed 200,000 people – many of them civilians – and the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August.
Japan and South Korea were two of the four non-NATO countries invited to attend the event, alongside Australia and New Zealand.

(02:50 GMT)First Iranian missile fired towards Israel since Trump ceasefire announcement
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
This would be something like the 25th missile attack the Iranians have launched, and actually the first since the announcement of that ceasefire agreement by US President Donald Trump.
The Iranian foreign minister had come out and said that Iran didn’t agree to anything but if the Israelis wanted to stop their aggression, Iran would stop firing as well.
So these missiles are continuing to get fired and the Israelis say they are going to keep pounding targets inside of Iranian territory.
Israeli officials speaking anonymously to Israeli media have also said that there are still a wide range of targets that Israel wants to strike inside Iran and that they are not finished with their goals.
But the main objective for them at this point has been achieved. Of depleting those nuclear capabilities. But when it comes to the missile fire that is still going to head toward Israel, well, it seems that is still in session.

(02:40 GMT)‘Signs of de-escalation’ after Iranian FM’s ‘double-edged’ ceasefire statements
From the very early hours of tonight, we were able to hear the sounds of massive explosions and interceptions by the air defence systems of the country and the capital in particular. Right now, we don’t hear that much.
Speaking of the latest post we saw from the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, on his X account, it seems that he is saying there is no ceasefire agreement as of date.
And also, he is saying that they have decided to stop their military operations. So, it could be implied that while Iran is ready for this ceasefire, at the same time it is not sure whether the Israeli side is going to strike. And if they continue to strike, the Iranian foreign minister is saying there is going to be no ceasefire on the ground.
So this is a sort of double-edged statement that we hearing from the Iranian foreign minister.
But right now, we can say that we see signs of de-escalation.

(02:30 GMT)Iran’s dissent over truce aimed at appealing to domestic audience
David Des Roches, a professor at the National Defense University in the US, says Iran and Israel are moving towards a ceasefire, despite the Iranian foreign minister claiming there has been no agreement on a truce.
“I think that the Iranian dissent is not really a dissent in substance, but rather on terms. That’s to appeal to their internal audience, to say, ‘We’re in charge of this programme.’ We’re not having a ceasefire dictated on us. We’re making these decisions because we want to do it by choice,” Des Roches told Al Jazeera.
“That’s not true, but by perhaps arguing over the fine points of when it takes effect, they’re able to give that impression. I think that Iran’s ability to continue this pace of operations is just not there,” he said.
The analyst, who is a former Pentagon official, also said that the Iranian attack on the Al Udeid base in Qatar was calibrated to prevent a further military response.
“We won’t know now, but we’ll know in a couple of months whether they chose deliberately to have an ineffective response, or whether this was the best they could do because of the depletion of their arsenal,” he said.
“But it’s clear that in order to maintain legitimacy amongst themselves, amongst the regime, they had to show some sort of response. But they didn’t want it to be so large that it would actually provoke further attack.”

The person also said that Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff also communicated with Iranians through direct and indirect channels.

(02:00 GMT)Israel’s Home Front Command says ‘no change’ to situation as ceasefire reports conflict
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
Since the announcement by US President Donald Trump, there has been no word from Israeli officials.
Netanyahu actually convened his Security Cabinet – those are top ministers with defence positions and also his security chiefs – to discuss the situation at hand. However, there is a gag order in place.
Netanyahu told his government not to talk about any sort of ceasefire with the Iranians just yet. An indication that perhaps there are details that need to be finalised. That perhaps Israel didn’t agree to this. But there has been nothing official from the Israelis.
In fact, within the last hour, the Israeli military’s Home Front Command… has said that there are no changes in place and people still need to listen to the directives of the government and military. That places are still going to be closed and there are still bans and limitations on public gatherings.

(01:50 GMT)No US response yet as Iran not ‘on the same page’ about reported ceasefire
We are still waiting for a response to the Iranian announcement.
Certainly, this is not the “full agreement” that Trump posted about three hours ago, and perhaps those congratulations were premature.
That’s at least what it’s pointing to.
It’s also confusing how these timelines line up because, frankly, they don’t. Trump had said six hours from the time of his post, which was at 22:00 GMT – that would be the beginning of this so-called ceasefire.
Obviously, Iran is not on the same page about that.
So there is much fluidity in the air, and we are still waiting to see how Washington responds to all of that.

(01:40 GMT)Russia sees little chance of reviving Iran nuclear deal
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov says he does not see conditions for restoring the 2015 deal, known as the JCPOA, but that now is the time to ramp up diplomacy.
Ryabkov’s comments to the Izvestia news outlet came before Trump claimed Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire.
“I do not see at the moment, conditions for restoring the [Iran deal],” Ryabkov told Izvestia. “But this does not mean abandoning diplomacy, quite the opposite. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to achieve… to come to some decisions that would help stabilise the situation.”
Ryabkov said that Russia “understood the logic and argumentation of our friends in Tehran, and of course, this means an end to the strikes, an end to further escalation by the other side”.
He said the cessation of attacks was the “clear pre-condition for our Iranian colleagues to consider their political-diplomatic options”.
The Iran nuclear deal, signed in 2015, aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. But Trump pulled Washington out of the pact in 2018, only to begin negotiations this year. Iran, however, cancelled the latest meeting after Israel launched attacks on the country.

US President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans have rallied around him after he announced that a ceasefire deal had been reached between Iran and Israel.

Johnson has been feuding with some members of his party who criticised Trump’s decision to strike Iran’s nuclear sites.
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most outspoken voices opposed to US intervention in the Iran-Israel war, also welcomed the announced ceasefire, writing on X, “Thank you, President Trump, for pursuing peace!”.
Greene earlier criticised Trump’s decision to bomb Iran, saying it felt “like a complete bait and switch to please the neocons, warmongers, military industrial complex contracts, and neocon tv personalities that MAGA hates and who were NEVER TRUMPERS!”

(01:10 GMT)Timing of Trump ceasefire announcement tells of US concern over ‘forever war’
Traditionally, we would be hearing about these developments from official channels.
But Donald Trump has really bucked all tradition and it is very much his style to be making this announcement on his own social media platform.
This is also telling of the timing of this announcement and why he is making it in this fashion. It is 7pm here in Washington, DC. It is not the middle of the night, as it is in the [Middle East] region.
So American people are paying attention. Ever since the US military strikes on the Iranian nuclear sites, people really have been paying attention for the first time.
This has really crossed into the majority of Americans’ minds, and there was a lot of trepidation.
People were questioning whether this had been the right move because the greatest fear had been that the US would enter yet another so-called “forever war”, which nobody wanted and which Trump said that he would not do.

(00:55 GMT)Caution, more questions after Trump claimed truce deal
Adam Clements, a US foreign policy analyst and former Pentagon official, says he is cautious about Trump’s announcement, noting the Israelis are continuing to bomb Tehran.
“Both the Israelis and the Iranians have not formally agreed in public to this agreement,” he said from Washington, DC.
“I think it also will come down to trust, which is so very low. And if there is a diplomatic opening, if there is some space, how will the Trump administration use it to try to actually carry out a ceasefire? How is it enforced? So many different questions…and in Tehran, there’s still ongoing strikes,” he said.
“I’m still very cautious. And even if there is a ceasefire… how are grievances through third parties aired? And then you go back to the same fundamental question, as far as the Iranian nuclear programme, is it now going to go more clandestine since the US has, ostensibly at least, set it back several months?”

(00:50 GMT)Israeli officials reportedly under ‘gag order’ to not speak about ceasefire
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.
No word whatsoever from the Israeli government and Israeli officials, who have not been speaking to Israeli media.
Israeli media are reporting that there is a gag order in place for [Prime Minister Netanyahu] and all of his ministers and other government officials to not speak about the ceasefire.
That’s going to mean that if there is some sort of announcement from the Israelis, it is going to come directly from Netanyahu himself.
It’s also worth mentioning that, behind the scenes earlier in the day, there were Israeli officials saying that because of the pressure from President Trump, the Israelis were now trying to wrap all of this up by the end of the week.
This is before the announcement from the American president.
So it is still a little bit unclear where we stand now because there has been no word from Israeli officials.

We’ve been reporting on a series of explosions in Tehran.
Moments before those blasts, Iranian news agencies reported that the country’s air force also shit down an Israeli Hermes surveillance drone over the capital.
An image posted by Iran’s Mehr news agency showed burning debris scattered all over a street as people gathered around the scene.
Similar images were also posted by Iran’s Tasnim news agency and the Fars news agency.

(00:30 GMT)Trump talks of ceasefire but reality different on ground in Tehran
Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi, speaking from Tehran, said that Trump’s announcement possibly “paves the way” for a ceasefire but the reality on the ground is very different, with sounds of explosions heard over the Iranian capital as air defence systems battle Israeli attacks.
“We haven’t received any official reaction from Tehran regarding the latest statement that came out from the US President Donald Trump,” Asadi said, adding that previous statements by Iran’s senior leaders signalled that an “imposed peace” would not be accepted.
“We have to keep in mind the previous statements that we heard from the Iranian leaders including the supreme leader of the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who came out to say a couple of days ago in a video message that we are not going to accept an imposed peace,” Asadi said.
“Whether the statement that we heard from the US president is going to be interpreted as an imposed peace or an agreed peace is something that we have to keep waiting for,” he said.
“A new emerging development on the ground here in Tehran is more sounds of explosions that we can hear related to the interception by air defence systems.”

According to Hamshahri News, “loud explosions” were heard in the west and centre of Tehran, as well as in the western suburb of Karaj.

(00:10 GMT)‘Still waiting for confirmation’ from Iran, Israel after Trump ceasefire announcement
We are still waiting for confirmation from Iran, from Israel, about the terms of this deal.
But as announced by Trump, and if it takes effect, as he said, it would indeed be a diplomatic coup and dramatic turnaround in just the last few days.
Going from Trump saying that he was open to regime change in Iran to now saying, “God bless, Iran.” And then after this air strike from Iran against the US airbase in Doha – all of this happening in just the last few hours, and certainly giving Trump that much sought-after ceasefire as the dealmaker that he said he would be as president.
He didn’t get one so far in Gaza. He hasn’t got one between Ukraine and Russia, and now he is announcing to the world – he says at least – that he is getting one between Iran and Israel.

(00:07 GMT)WATCH: Qatar says it has ‘right to respond’ to Iranian missile attack
Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari says Qatar was the “obvious choice” for Iranian retaliation against the US because it hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East, while also acting as a trusted intermediary for Tehran.

(00:05 GMT)Trump’s announcement in full
Here’s what the US president said on social media:
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!
“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”
“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”

(00:02 GMT)A recap of recent developments
- US President Donald Trump says Israel and Iran have agreed to a “complete and total” ceasefire that will bring an end to what he called “the 12-day war”.
- Neither Israel nor Iran has confirmed that they have agreed to such a ceasefire.
- Israel continues to attack Iran, with blasts heard in Tehran, and Iranian officials issuing an evacuation warning for residents of the Ramat Gan area near Tel Aviv.
- Trump’s announcement comes after Iran launched a missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which houses US troops, in retaliation for the US strikes that targeted nuclear facilities in Iran on Sunday.
- Qatar has condemned the attack as a violation of its sovereignty and said it reserves the right to respond. It says its air defences intercepted 18 of the 19 missiles fired and that the incident did not cause any deaths or injuries.
- Israeli forces also continue attacking Gaza, killing at least 43 people in the Strip, including 13 aid seekers.
